Welzie (Nick Welles) creates unique whimsical pieces of art inspired by his beach lifestyle and bright Hawaii surroundings. His paintings are shown throughout Hawaii’s fine art galleries and large scale murals in California and Mexico. Welzie has been a featured artist for the Greenroom Festival in Japan and the Pow Wow Hawaii mural event along with various publications. His uplifting use of color and imagery has gained international attention.
As a teenager immersed in the surfing culture, Welzie landed a job at a local surfboard manufacturer. His passion for art followed, using paint pens to draw images on the surfboards he created. Surfboards and art collided when he and surfboard shaper Carl Olsen started Two Crows Surfboards, a collaboration that allowed for complete artistic freedom which brought inspiring surf art from the waves to the gallery walls. Combining craftsmanship and creativity, Two Crows makes high end longboards that can make any surfer feel like they are surfing their best. Located in the Waialua Sugar Mill, Two Crows brings decades of research and development to their wave riding vehicles. Combining the shaping of Carl Olsen and the colors and art of Welzie, it’s no wonder these beautiful wave gliders are in high demand!

A lot of inspiration comes from Welzie’s travels as he searches for the perfect wave. On his surf trips he spends time in the community painting murals and adding some colors to their lives. Every year Welzie brings down “Art Kits” for the local kids who always gravitate towards Welzie and his projects. Complete with sketchbooks, pens, pencils, sharpeners, paints, brushes and scissors. the kids get enough supplies to really have some fun and be creative. Welzie will gather the kids in the local town center and start handing out the presents to all the kids who help him access walls and help paint.
Welzie primarily works out of his studio near the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s Famous North Shore, but can also be found in spots around the world adding a bit of unique color and joy to local communities.
Black Sand Publishing is incredibly proud to be working with Welzie Art and is excited about finding even more opportunities to bring Nick’s art to the next level.
